I have a tear shaped like a "7" in the outer shell of my ski jacket - each arm of the tear is 2-3 inches long. Is there any way to fix it? Sewing doesn't seem like it would work as the fabric is so thin.

Go to a craft and or fabric store and get those adhesive patches that they have where it is fabric on one side and an iron on adhesive on the other. My Mom used to use them on jeans (before holy ones were the style), but they can also be used on extra wear points of clothing- like on the elbows of corduroy jackets. Instead of trying to find a fabric that matches and and patching it on top of the rip- cut the patch to the size you need and insert it inside of the rip- adhesive side up. hold the outer material together and flat. Iron carefully, just enough to heat the adhesive underneath. After a minute, you'll know whether it stuck right and then you can use a small amount of clear matte fabric glue or paint (the kind meant for protecting homemade designs on clothes and is washable) to hold it together on the outside and "seal" it. Spread it thin and even, 1 layer or coat might be enough. You don't really want to do more than 2 or it could distort the color of the jacket. Make sure the jacket has cooled from the ironing before you apply the glue. If you are in the US, I can let you know of some stores.

Repair Nylon Fabric

Helga has the right idea. I would add...don't get the iron too hot or you will melt the nylon fabric. Look for low temp patches or even stitch witchery with another piece of fabric.

try the fabric glues, slip another piece of material in under the tear and glue it to it. might work temporarily, kind of depends on where the tear is and how much wear it gets.
