I already had a DDR400 512mb memory inside on of the slots and i placed it next to that.. but my computer isnt registering the new card i dont think, still says in Properties of My Computer that ive only got 512mb.. shouldnt it say 786 now?

you cant use that ram, its 133 speed is a lot less than the 400 speed, unless you put it in the first slot but this will slow your 400 down to 133, and will basically be a waste, as your pc,s memory will be 2 thirds slower but only 1 third bigger

It depends. Is the speed of the 256mb DDR also 400? You might have a computer that requires that all of the RAM be the same size. Meaning that if you have one 512mb stick that it must be paired with a 512mb stick. Otherwise if i'm misunderstanding you and you already had 2 256mb (adding to 512) and then attempted to add a third 256 mb stick, I know of certain computers/motherboards that will only operate when memory is added in pairs. I.e. either 2 slots full or 4. (1 or 3 will not work) Good luck!

First of all do you know that the 256MB Ram is good?

Not all RAM is compatible, and that may be the reason the motherboard is not registering it.
Try a different DIMM slot where you have it inserted.
If your computer has 4 DIMMS then take the 256 and put it in slot 3 and not 2. The second DIMM is most likely for running dual channel memory. As stated prior on this forum, DIMM 1 and 2 MAY work together and 3 and 4 work together, for dual channel.
Does the BIOS see the added RAM?
And no it should not read 786, but it should read 768.

can u mention the speed of the 256 mb Ram ?

Remove the previous one and try the new one and check if itz workin
If itz workin fine, i think there may be prob either wit the slots or try findin out if any conflict arises due to the diff in speed of both the RAM s u use !!

Hi.
1. Please remove the first one and put the new one , restart and check if it works.
Check all the slotes for the memory(place you put the memroy chip).
You may have problem with slotes.
And finally just change the memory at the shop and try again the processes.
Have a luck.

Yes that is odd. Did u try restarting the computer? Sometimes it takes a reboot for it to recognize it. I hope this helped.

Make sure you seated the card correctly. Make sure it is pushed in all the way and that the fasteners at the sides are locked in.
