I got an Acer travelmate last year, a bog standard basic model which only cost €550, (about ?£400) and put Microsoft Office on it, got a datacard for wireless internet connection, and it's working perfectly well. So well, in fact, that I now use it for everything, and the desktop is gathering dust in the corner! The battery life is reasonable (2.5 to 3 hours, depending on the power settings), and the screen is perfectly adequate at 12". I think the bigger screens make the notebook too big to carry round easily.
I use mine for internet, emails, work processing, itunes, powerpoint presentations, lots of excel stuff, google earth and games. The games and google earth and IM are the things that take a lot of space, so the only quibble I have with it is that I really need to get some more memory soon - not a problem, I knew it had limited memory when I bought it, but it's the only fault I have to find with it.
Other than that, I think it's great, the datacard means I've got access to the internet anywhere, I'm not tied to the house as I would be with a wireless connector, even though it is set up for one.
You can also get adaptors now that will charge the laptop using the cigarette lighter socket in the car - I haven't used one, so I don't know what they're like, but if they work, that means you're pretty well set!
Hope this helps.

DO the math.... if you buy a laptop:

you have to buy the hardware, about (300£ for the hardware)
The operating system there more likely to be windows SO its about (200£ for the operating system)

Best wya to go is get a linxu operating system you can get one for about 600-700£

Linux is a good OS!
