Im going to assume FTP.

But anyway, all I want to do is just be able to connect to a folder with a bunch of my crap/folders that I can upload and download from anytime?

Any programs to set it up with or?

Thanks,

Dominick

Well you could just upload those files to the internet. You can use http://www.mediamax.com that has 25gb of space for free just make an account make sure its nice and secure and when your on another computer just go to that web-site and download your files. Now if you want to connect to another computer you could just type the ip address i believe but it gets a lot more complicated than that or you could telnet now you have to create an account on the computer you are trying to get your files from and get to know telnet and how it works and all that jazz but do a little research on the best way for you. Good Luck

How is your PC connected to the net? A router or a direct connection via a cable or DSL Modem?

If you're using a Router, you must tell the router to allow incoming connections and to route connections to port 21 to your PC. Check your Routers manual on how to do that.

Then in Windows click "Software" in the Control Panel. Go to "Add/Remove Windows Components".

Install "Internernet Information Services (IIS)". This is a fully fuctional FTP, Web and e-Mail Server.
As you only need FTP you only configure the FTP part.

Now the last hurdle: Connecting from the outside.
Most ISPs will disconnect you after 24 hours, or you disconnect your PC yourself if you shut it off.
Either way, you will get a new IP Adress after every reconnect.

Since you don't know your adress after a new connection, you need a so called Dynamic DNS entry. Free DynDNS services are at the adress below.

Some routers have support for Dynamic DNS hosts built right in. Check the manual for the correct settings.
If all went well, you can start your FTP Program from the outside and connect to (for example) ftp://domspc.dyndns.org and you're on your PC.

It depends on what your PC is running. I'm going to assume Windows, so what you want to do is look into Shared Folders, but be cautioned that Shared Folders (or even running an FTP server) can be dangerous and can be compromised (hacked).

You might want to look at storing your files on Gmail instead:

It depends on your operating system -- you have a plethora of choices on Windows as well as on Mac. On Windows, there's WS_FTP, War FTP Daemon, FileZilla Server, etc. And on the Mac, there's the built-in FTP service, PureFTPd, etc.

well, you'd have to either use something like logmein.com (which is free... better than pcanywhere) but then you wouldn't be able to copy files from your host computer to the one you are working from. you could always register a domain and store your docs on a web server.
