when does it overheat? you might just need a new radiator fan. the fan kicks in when the engine is on but you arent moving, like sitting in traffic. the next time you are driving, check the water temp, if it's not running hot when you are driving, but starts to overheat in traffic, then its the fan, not the radiator.

assuming that your coolant level is where it should be and your fan is working it could be a plugged radiator, stuck thermostat, or bad water pump. take your radiator cap off while your car is cold and start the engine after it warms up the coolant should start to circulate and you should be able to see it moving. if it is then i would check to see if the fins on the radiator are plugged, if you don't have a screen in front of it and its a older car it could be filled with dirt and left over bugs. you can take it to a car wash and clean it or use an air hose to blow it out, if you use the car wash make sure you don't get the engine electrical system wet. if the water is not circulating once the engine gets up to temp i would have the thermostat replaced, if you don't have any coolant circulating with a new thermostat then you should have your cooling system flushed and your water pump checked. be careful with antifreeze it tastes sweet and pets like that sweet taste but its deadly and it doesn't take much to make them sick.

Could be lots of things we need more details. Air pocket in cooling system caused by opening the system for some reason or running 2 low on coolant due to leak. Could be closed thermostat, clogged up radiator, just low on coolant, a bad gauge, a bag temperature sensor. if sensor runs through computer could be bad computer. Or a worst case scenario blown headgasket.http://www.trustmymechanic.com/overheat.html

you might have blown the head gasket...or the radiator hoses might be cracked...the only way to tell is to get it to a repair shop.
