Did you register XP with Microsoft within the thirty days when you first bought the computer? If not, then you do have a pirated version.
If yes, then did you change something in your computer. New hard drive or some new hardware? When you register XP, a virtual snap shot of your computer is taken of about ten or so hardware benchmarks to lock in XP with only your computer. If you change one of these benchmarks, Microsoft sees piracy unless you contact them and let them know what you are doing. There are or were copies of XP floating out there with the code removed that required registration. Microsoft is very aggressive about finding and prosecuting. Regardless of the reason, if you never registered XP then you had better cease and desist with its use. You are getting the warning. You don't want a knock on your door. Either contact Microsoft and get the situation straightened out or buy a real copy. The upgrade version is a hundred dollars cheaper and is the exact same XP as the full more expensive version. The only thing is that you have to have a previous Windows CD.

Pretty much what everyone else said is basically all true. It could be any number of things. However, another thing to consider is that I believe with the Windows XP software it has a 9 point security encoding system and if any one of those 9 does not check out it will not allow the update. If the windows software was downloaded onto another computer and already registered then you cannot download the same software to another computer so if it was on your old computer or a friends or your parents, etc... It will not let you update on yours and it will recognize it as pirated.

If you have a pirated version of Windows XP and the machine it is on is store-bought or straight from the manufacturer(as in, it still has the same operating system that it originally had when bought) i would suggest calling the manufacturer of your PC and demanding a refund for Windows XP.

until you get a genuine key, as the posters above me said, you can't get updates for your PC

I don't understand what the question is. It seems like a statement, and a true one at that. If you have a pirated copy of Windows XP, then no you cannot receive updates.

Use the system restore utility to roll back to a time before that update was installed. Some less than reputable computer repair shops will install a pirated version of windows when you bring your computer in to be fixed. It happened to a friend of mine.

there's a program called autopatcher which can help.
http://www.autopatcher.com/

it will let you install updates from an offline zip pack. works the same as the windows site with an itemized list of updates to pick and choose from with full rollback support...all updates available at microsoft site are included.

i suggest getting the full version of the program and then the latest update...they make a new update patch once a month but you'll only need the latest one so feb 07.....they periodicly release an updated "full version" as well and next one is due out in March. in the meantime just get the last full version and feb's update and you're all set. (on the downloads page grab the november 06 full and the feb update...the dragon server is the fastest on the list)

they also have an office updater on that site as well but it's a seperate program.

The message does not lie. Microsoft is actively checking out computers to see if the versions of Windows installed is authentic - in other words, they're checking to see if you bought Windows or if Windows came with the computer you bought.

If you downloaded Windows illegally or if you bought a computer in which someone downloaded it illegally on it, you won't be able to get updates.

Did you buy the computer from a refutable store lke bestbuy? You can go to them and get a non pirated version, or turn them in for giving you one, because they might be using one copy over all the computers they are selling to save money.

Just go Start->Settings->Control Panel->Automatic Update and set Automatic update to have it without visiting the Microsoft Site.
It will Automaticly check and download the updates your PC needs.
Best regards.

If you have a pirated version, then you must purchase a genuine copy, as eventually MS will close your version down.

If, however, you do have a genuine copy, then contact Microsoft and they will help you out.
