As much as it pains me, you've got to give it to the Yankees for the longevity of their success.
The Celtics hold the title the most times in basketball, but have been 20 years since they've won, and have been aweful lately.
The Montreal Canadians have 24 championships, but none since 1993, and have missed the playoffs quite a bit.
The Dallas Cowboys would probably be the NFL team, with five Superbowl titles, but they have had their own share of ups and downs.
That's why the Yankees win. They always seem to be good. Sure, they've had some down years in the past, but overall, spanning about 100 years, they're the most consistant. I mean look at today's team...do you honestly see them not making the playoffs anytime soon? Money doesn't always guarantee a title, but it pretty much guarentees a playoff spot and a chance.
(Although the Curse of AROD will doom them until he is traded or released)

To paraphrase Bill Clinton, what is greatest?
To be sure the Yanks have an impressive winning record. They have a storied stadium and an owner that's, well, that's George.
But, the greatest franchise, according to the history of sports must be the Brooklyn Dodgers. No other team could lose for so long and still be so loved by its fans (okay, the Cubbies could be in that catergory now, but they got to the playoffs).
This was the team that was worse that the 62 Mets for a decade and better than the '27 Yankees for at least 6 years (sorry, but the 1951 -1956 Dodger teams were the greatest in history!).
AND the Dodgers kept their fans when they did the most guttsy thing in pro baseball in '47, Jackie Robinson. Lest we forget, the Yankees were the very last team in the Major Leagues to be all white.
Unfortunately, the owner of the Dodgers, whose name does NOT deserve to be written here, robbed Brooklyn and moved the team to LA.
My vote goes to the Brooklyn (Trolley) Dodgers franchise.....

THE CLINTONS ok maybe not a sports franchise until Chelsea makes the U.S. Archery Team
Cowboys would be if this were all of sports
Unfortunatley The Yankees in baseball with the Surprising A's and Braves tied for second. Remember The A's won in other cities as well
basketball would have 2 be the Lakers untill the Bulls put together another 6 ring run until then Celtics would remain second

For those non hockey fans, the Montreal Canadians had won the most championships of any franchise till the mid 90's. If it wasn't for the Yankees run of the 90's, they would be the clear victor. You could also make the case that the Yankees didn't do anything in 80's and Habs have done nothing the last ten years or so. The most successful franchises in my opinion are.
Yankees
Canadians
Celtics
Brazilian Soccer Team

No matter how much anybody here hates them, you can not deny the fact that the New York Yankees are the greatest sports franchise of all-time. They have 26 World Series championships (that alone could be enough to make them the greatest), they have some of the greatest and most famous players in history as alumni (Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Derek Jeter, I could go on and on), some of the greatest moments in baseball history have taken place in pin stripes (such as the only perfect game in WS history, courtesy of Don Larson). The Yankees are recognized as a great franchise by people all over world...people who don't give a damn about what we do here know who the Yankees are. Face it, they have the greatest franchise of all-time.

New York Yankees - 39 American League Pennants and 26 World Series Championships. If I'm not mistaken there are more Yankee players in the hall of fame than any other team in Major League Baseball. Certainly from a financial perspective they are one of the two or three richest franchises in the world.

New York Yankees!!! 26 World Titles and counting. No other team will compare to the Yankees (atleast not in this day in age) because Baseball has no Salary Cap. The owner can spend and spend and spend. That is why I am a YANKEE fan. The owner isnt worried about the almighty $$$$$ he wants to win. Winning is more important than a few bucks here and there. Maybe some of these other teams and owners and fans should start to take a look at the Yankees and how they are operated. If I ever own my own team, Winning will be more important than the $$$$$!!!!!!

Another vote here for the Yankees. The key term is "all-time." In the NBA these days, they are ready to call your team a "dynasty" if you win three championships is a row. (Granted, the Celtics run was incredible and will probably never be duplicated--but they only did it once.) The world would come to an end if an NFL team won three Superbowls in a row. But the Yankees once won five world series in a row, and another time they won four in a row. They have put together a dynasty type run in almost every decade since the 1920's.

If you go by total championships it is the New York Yankees.
If you go by total franchise wins it is the New York / San Fransico Giants the only team with over 10,000 wins.
If you go by championships is a short time period it is the Boston Celtics.
My choice is the hated Yankees
