The Oscar is for the best performance, not who has been in the business the longest. Apparently, the Academy thought she did the best job.
BTW - Just because she didn't come in 1st place on A.I. doesn't mean she's a loser. She is a very talented singer. American Idol is a popularity contest, not a talent contest.

You have got to be kidding me! It shouldn't matter how long she has been acting if she did the best job. There are quite a few actor/actresses that started out as singers. Beyonce CANNOT and I repeat CANNOT act. Think about it this way. How would you feel if you work at a job and you were passed up for a promotion while someone else who didn't work as well or as hard as you got the job just because they worked there longer. How would you like that. No one is saying that Cate isn't a great actress only that Jennifer did a better job in the movies that were nominated.

Jennifer Hudson was great in Dreamgirls Just because she is new to making films doesn't mean she can't win an Oscar. You don't win an Oscar because you been an actress for a long time. Besides, A.I. is a reality contest, not a reputable source for genuine talent. Even though, Cate Blanchette was great, nobody saw Babel so that hurt her chances of winning.

ummmm yes sweetie.... First of all, at times the judges on American Idol or America do not know what they are looking for! Jennifer Hudson has pure talent and I'm glad the entertainment industry recognized it! Just because other actresses may have more experience do not make them more talented! Everyone knows that Beyonce is not the best actress in the world; mainly because of her looks she gets cast in a movie. She has not had more than 3 lines in any other movie. Dreamgirls showed the pure talent that actresses are supposed to embody..Jenn Hudson walked in off the street and had Effie nailed and we all witnessed it on screen..We all felt Effie's pain...Sorry if you are mad that not only is she a singer, she is a talented actress too!

Jennifer Hudson is a RARE talent!! How many actors come out in the Biz and win a OSCAR for their FIRST MOVIE!!!! She deserved that OSCAR just as much as any other actress.

American Idol is just what Answerer #1 said.

I'm happy for Jennifer. The relatively small pool of academy members who vote are all different people, obviously. Her acting was amazing in that film...a natural talent.

...And it was great to see Scorcese finally win a Oscar.

I personally do not think she deserved the Oscar, after all it was her first movie. Her acting wasn't that great, I think she got it for her singing in the movie.
She was up against so many better actress's who did deserve it like Cate Blanchette who is an excellent actress. Maybe Cate didn't win because she already received an Oscar.

I have a theory about this. The first part is that one person saw the movie and they raved about how good the film was and how much better Jennifer was than Beyonce (she was) and then all of the people who are tired of the Beyonce over exposure jumped on the wagon and pumped her role up to be more than it was. The second part is that the other nominees were weak or their media exposure was weak so the only person visible in that category was Jennifer. If there were any other stronger nominees then they would have won. I saw the movie and I think it was an okay movie and while Jennifer was better than Beyonce, she wasn't better than Anika Noni Rose (who has been completely shafted in my opinion). Also, Jennifer's "And I am telling you" didn't do anything for me. If you want chills then listen to Jennifer Holiday sing it.

AMEN to your questioning this decision.

hmm a singer portraying a singer? wow ya thats REALLY hard. sounds like she had to do a lot of studying and gathering of information *rolls eyes* how the hell does SHE beat cate blanchett? what a piece of crock. reputable actresses who are actually theatrical intellects, whom are extremely passionate about movie making, are beaten by this little nobody? and yes shes a nobody. her performace was mediocre at best. just because she is a singer doesnt mean shes an actress. i sometimes think the oscars are bunch of bullshit politics trying to get approval from the minority public. its no longer about movie making and passion for it.
at least scorsese finally got his long deserved oscar.

actually she made dreamgirls, it's her movie, she stole it right out from under beyonce. i say bravo and congrats it just goes to show you that talent has nothing to do with "idols" she had the right role at the right time, many legendary actors never win an award, life isn't always fair. that's just the way it is.
