Hairspray works. You can also get a product called a Fixatif from an art supply store. It comes in two varieties - Workable Fixatif lets you continue to work on the drawing, but protects it from accidental smudging. Permanent Fixatif is a stronger version that is meant to be used when the picture is finished.
If you're mailing the sketch, though, the packaging is more important than a fixative. Cut out a frame from a piece of cardboard and tape it to the front of the picture, then put a solid piece of cardboard on the front and back of your sketch. That will help prevent it from being smudged as it's shoved around through the mail. It will cost a bit more to mail, but not _much_ more.
Original art is a magnificent gift. Your friend is fortunate to know a generous artist such as yourself. (And, by the way, if it's not so much the gift of art, but rather that you want your friend to see the picture, you can always photocopy it and send that rather than the original - photocopies handle the mail much better than pencil drawings.)
Have fun, good luck.

Hairspray does work but you are better off getting fixative spray at an art store. Every art store carries it and so do some hardware stores.

Yes - for God's sake use hairspray. 'Professional artists' materials' means 'the same product but three times as expensive'. I also have 15 years' experience so I can guarantee you this.
