I love Mary Kay's foundations. Great quality, long-wearing...It's the best foundation I've used so far!
They have different kinds, such as creme to powder, regular liquid in medium or heavy coverage, tinted moisturizer, etc. I'm sure you could find the right formula/color for you.
The prices are very reasonable too, from $14-$18. To order (or just try) any of their foundations, you need to first find a consultant. If you don't know one personally, you can find one at their website.

Good luck!

There are many "good" foundations on the market. It depends on the coverage you want and the forumla that you need.
I have worked with sevearl brands including Shisedo that I find are "good".
Other brands...?
Lancome
Bobbi Brown
Iman
Black Opal
Face Atelier
....the list goes on and on.
My suggestion is to make sure you have proper skin care or your makeup will not last on your skin correctly. The first step is to start with clean skin. Then make sure to hydrate eye area and face with a good moisturizer. Even if you have oily skin, the proper moisturizer will make sure foundation glides on skin evenly during application and enhances the longevity of the makeup staying on the skin. If it isn't hyrated properly, skin will try to get it from your foundation and makeup can appear faded or look cakey.
Application tips:
Glide foundation on face to give it a sheer natural look. Then go back to areas that need extra coverage and "pat" additional foundation over those areas until the coverage is to your liking. If the foudation isn't enough coverage on its own use a concealer as well, making sure you "pat" not rub.
Let makeup "settle" before lightly topping skin with powder to set it. If formula doesn't require powder, feel free to skip it to give a more dewy or semi-matte appearance to skin.

For a medium coverage i suggest you use a creme foundation type. This foundation gives you a natural finish while offering the highest coverage. It is very versatile foundation, because even though it tends to be thicker and heavier consistency, it can be made sheerer simply by applying it with a damp sponge.
For a maximum coverage i suggest you use a stick foundation type. This type of foundation is concealer as well so it offers ideal maximum coverage for imperfections as well as covering ruddy and uneven skin tone. But it can look a little heavy on clear skin where a lot of coverage is not needed.

Definitely use a foundation that doesn't contain any synthetic oils so it doesn't clog your pores and stays on. I HIGHLY recommend L'Bri Pure n' Natural's foundation. Aloe is the first ingredient, so you're assured that your skin is being treated all day. It doesn't contain any oils so you're pores won't get all clogged and the day's "debri" won't stick to it. Also, you always want to "set" your foundation with a translucent powder. This keeps it looking great all day. Check L'Bri out at suenelson.lbri.com. They have a fabulous skin care line also.

I use Physicians Formula mineral powder. You need to buy a brush to apply it. Since foundation should only be applied to where you need coverage you should find the shade closest to yours. There are only a few which makes it really easy. Then I apply a really light bronzer because it is winter and off I go. Super simple and gives a clean look.

Bare minerals and Physician's formulas are the best.
Why? They offer natural SPF protection and if your skin isn't bad, they lightly glide over it to subtly enhance it.
