No, it is not "erased" from your hard drive.
Delete and format do not "erase" data from your computer. You have to use a secure wiping program to actually write data to the drive.
When you delete a file, any file, you don't actually "erase" it, you only remove the entry from the file table. Think of it as removing the card catalog entry from a library. While the book will be much more difficult to find, if you are thorough and look at each and every book, you will eventually find what you are looking for.
Hope that helps.

Yes it gets deleted from ur site as it wont be viewable anymore, but the data remains in ur harddisk till a particular period where it gets overwritten.
No need to worry as u cant even search for it through ur search screen. U need to use a software to get it back. U can stay in peace after deleting the websites u've browsed. Nobody has access to it. :)

it'll be harder to find after deleting history, going to hidden folder called history IE5 to be sure its empty is good also, of course a defrag helps ,then theres write zeroes to drive (disk maintenance programs from drive vendors) but to be really sure i prefer 10pd sledge hammer then its really gone.

Yes,
But you can retrieve it by using special tools for find the erased data.(Ex : Norton Unerase) Without using such tools you can't get them back.
