Yo! I heard it was because Ben was from Philly and his bastard son was governor of New Jersey so Ben went for independence just to tick off his bastard kid.
For the most part, Mr. Franklin was too ill and uncomfortable to be of much help in forming the decision for independence. He left most of that up to Mr. Adams and Mr. Jefferson.
