In the States, it's a bathroom.
And yes, if it's outside of the house it's called a bathroom even though it has no bath or it's called a restroom even though you're not suppose to rest there, so should we wait in the sitting room, or sit in the waiting room? And lavatories in the US only exist in Junior High for some weird reason... you've got a great cultural language question going on here. Now go ask the Aussies cuz we know about the Brits and their Loos. Time to get the skinny on the Aussies and their roos....
