According to the writings of the Kalidasa, in his Abhijnana Shakuntala, there was a ruler called Dushyantha who married a daughter of a saint. Her name was Shakuntala. When the king married her, he gave a ring to her as the token of their marriage and left her and went to his kingdom. Later Shakuntala was always in the thought of Dushyantha Maharaja. So, it resulted in the curse of a great saint who cursed her, until Dushyantha sees the ring of the Shakuntala, he won't recognize her. This was over. The Shakuntala lost her ring while going to Dushyantha's kingdom in water which was eaten by a fish. So, Dushyantha failed to recognize her. Shakuntale was in agony and made a small hut in the borders of his kingdom. There she give birth to Bharatha. When Bharatha was 3 years of age, the fisherman caught the fish which ate the ring of Shakuntala. The fisherman took the ring to the king. There Dushyantha remebered the story of Shakuntala. He went in search of Shakuntala. There they met and lived happily ever after.
Shakuntala's son Bharatha was a very brave king. He took all the India over his control and started to rule it. The people in his kingdom were so happy that they started calling their kingdom as Bharata's kingdom which later became Bharata.

Long long ago... A king known as Bharata ruled our country. In those days India is known as 'Bharatavarsham'. On his name our country is being called 'Bharat'. Due to the sindhu (Indus) river, the Britishers called our country 'India'. Due to the major part of the people in our country are Hindus, our country is also known as 'Hindustan'. Every Indian should know about his own country and should be in a position to explain others, but not to ask others about our own country.
