I have a laptop and I want to upgrade to a faster hard drive. Is it easy for me to do it myself? I wouldn't like to take it in to have it done if it's actually a simple procedure.

Actually I know how to remove and install it phisically, that's pretty simple, but how can I get my data and operating system the way it was?

ummmmmmm yes.
depending on what kind of laptop you have it is VERY simple. simply shut down the laptop and remove the battery. Now with the laptop upside down, just look around for a bit. you will see that there are several "doors" most with only 1 or 2 small screws. The symbol for a hard drive is the "drum" or "canister" looking icon, or it may be the 3 circles (looks like 3 CD's on top of each other). Unscrew that door, and voila there is your hard drive. It will be pretty obvious how to dismount the old hard drive, and put your new one back in the same way. (you may need to remove the bracket from your old one to use on your new one).

I'm not sure that you could find a PC shop that doesn't know how to change out a laptop hard drive. That would be silly.

Good luck. Email if u have any questions!

Depending on the brand of laptop and how easily the drive gets removed, you could do it quite easily. Apple MacBooks are notorious for being difficult. So, like the previous poster, if yours is an Apple, don't do it yourself.

Most other brands, there is a single screw on the bottom and the drive slides out of an opening. You might have to take the drive cover off (laptop plastic part, not drive part) and take the drive cage off the old drive and put on the new drive.

Go to the mfg's website for the manuals. You may also have instructions on how to replace the drive in the mfg manuals that should be on the old drive.

absolutely not. Taking apart a laptop is something only an experienced technician should do. (Unless you just like to tinker and don't care if you can't get it back together.) I wouldn't even take it to a technician unless they specialized in laptops.
