It was pretty simple, as I recall it. The U.S. went into Vietnam slowly; the citizens of the U.S. were accustomed to winning the wars they fought, especially as it hadn't really been all that long since the end of WWII. When it became clear that (for whatever reason) the U.S. wasn't "playing to win," I think that the people of the U.S. were confused, at the very least, and just plain angry. When the bodies started coming home, having died for no apparent purpose to many, the public became angrier still, and they ceased to support the war. I suppose it was the first time it had happened, really - even Korea had the support of most people, and there was no concept of "support the troops but not the war" as we are seeing today. Ironically, most of those troops were draftees who had no choice as to whether or not to serve, whereas today, our armed services are volunteer. I suppose it just proves that people can be fickle.

Well I remember it as a kid who's father went. He was gone for a year, and almost had to go back. He never talked about it, actually not even to this day.
What I remember most is that one day the politicians would say you can bomb, and the next they would tell them they couldn't. At least in the current war they let the military do its job, but the truth is that as long as we fight wars where the US isn't threatened directly, and for people that have been fight between themselves for thousands of years, I doubt the out come will be very good.
Like the Korean war (conflict) before it the American public was barely aware of it at the beginning, it wasn't until it dragged on and on and there was no end in sight and their kids started dieing that that changed. It was actually the French that first got into it, then the US went as advisors, and then it just got bigger and bigger. And as far as the US was concerned it was probably the first war that we "lost" not something that Americans like especially with so many dead kids, and being drafted to do it and all.
You know it is the Vietnam war that changed how the American people dealt with the current war. There was so much bad feelings for the Vietnam war that people that fought in it not only didn't get any respect they got spit on. But the American people learned that this was a really bad thing and at least learned not to blame the soldier that was just doing what he was told. Also you can thank the Vietnam war for the fact that the draft isn't in place now.
Also remember something. The Vietnam "war" wasn't a war, it was a conflict because the congress never declared it as a war. This same is true of the Korean conflict. And also remember that the Korean conflict never ended. A truce was declared, not an end to the conflict. And for North Korea that "war/conflict" has never ended. They are still waiting for what they believe will come and that is the start up of that war.
It is really sad that humans are like this.

Look at what's going on around you, now. If there is a draft call to give Bush his troops, there will be the same kind of demonstrations as there were in the Vietnam era.
This war was entered for even less actual reasons than the Vietnam war.

There is a lot of factors. 1. The Media. when people started seeing their own get killed it wasn't cool anymore. Back then in was real graphic. 2. The point. Everyone started asking why are we really there? Combine that with seeing your father, brother, cousin, friend killed on T.V. 3. The Draft into a B.S war. Not only was our involvement pointless, now we were forcing people to go. 4. atrocities. News of all the evil things soldiers were doing while on duty.
