If the all-wheel-drive system isn't working, does the car then become rear-wheel drive?

For Subarus, it becomes FWD. Most AWD cars have a majority of power to the front wheels until slippage occurs. Subaru is a 90/10 split.

All depends on the car, some are constant 4WD which drive the front wheels most of the time.

if your drive shaft breaks then its front wheel drive
