yep, totally normal... look at it from his perspective - "BIG SCARY NOISY THING!!!" he doesnt understand that you are trying to clean, he just knows that its not a sound that he knows and its really loud and scary.... my 2 yr old is still scared to death of the vaccuum cleaner... I wait until I can take him over to my sister in laws before I vaccuum, poor little guy... otherwise he's crying for hours afterwards...

Show me a baby who isn't afraid a great big sucking machine that makes a loud noise.
But yes the actual freaking out is pretty scare. I suggest just keep doing what you are doing but maybe give a warning like " OK baby its time to vacuum ready set go " and baby will soon get used to it.
good luck

Yes, Kids of any age up to about age 6 could freak out about anything. I use to teach daycare there was a boy terrified of pasta...horrible horrible crying fits as well as a child who was scared of one of the sing-a-long Aladdin songs we had to skip over the song or he'd go on for hours. So really a vacuum is a more common one especially for his age.

Yes, keep him away from the vacuum and get someone to take him outside or divert his attention when you do vacuum. He is just a new creature on this Earth and everything is new to him. Take it easy on him.
My son was terrified of Santa Claus.

In my experience, yes. My son did the same thing. The vacuum didn't scare him until he was around that age. He still doesn't like it!

Yes, wouldn't you be scared at a very new, loud and abrasive sound? I had to carry my son around when he was 2 while I was vacuuming because he was scared. But they get used to it and eventually want to ride the thing. :)

Yes, it's the noise of it that would be freaking him out. I wouldn't worry about it, my 12 month old is still scarred of it.

then don't put the baby near the vaccume cleaner. lol. no really just keep in his crib while you clean, have someone hold him when you clean his room. he is only 4 months old, and he doesn't understand what all of these loud sounds are.
