The Oscars are supposed to honor the best films in how they were created, the acting, the thought put into them, etc. Success is not always based on money and popularity ( although most films did quite well I'm sure).

If small Indie films seem boring, then they are simply not for you, or you are not giving them a chance, or your just too used to the recycled action-packed crap or poor humor used in a lot of hits. I'm not criticizing you though, so do not take it personally. I agree some films looked really boring to me but I'm sure that they were very well made and lots of creativity, skill, and thought were put into them. And also, you can't always judge a book by its cover.
