We have 3 kids, but didn't bank until our 3rd. Realistically, you probably don't need to bank for both (since you have so much genetic commonality between the siblings) - really the only reason you would do it (aside from just general peace of mind, if it makes you feel better), is if the disease you would be looking to treat would ONLY be treatable by a child's OWN cord cells. However, my understanding is that this would be an exception, rather than a rule.

For some objective information, you might want to review the March of Dimes article at: http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/681_1160.asp

One other option you could consider is donating to a public bank (where the costs are assumed by the public bank) for all to benefit....

The decision is really a personal (and, frankly, financial) one, but from my research, I would find it difficult to justify the high expense (unless cost is not an issue for you)....

Congratulations and best regards,

Lisa - Mom of 3 in Sacramento

Actually it is not necessary to keep the 2nd child blood cord. If anything (touch wood) happen to your child, he/ she can use the 1st child blood cord.

By the way, do not throw away the cord. Donate it. I heard that the institute can use the cord to do research. Who knows. Your donation can save other people's life / they can discover a cure for certain disease.

I think your first one will have enough to cover for any contingency for both child. But you might want to check with your doctor on this.
