There are many texts that people have difficulty with: the Bible, Shakespeare, legal documents etc. Personally I despise legal jargon! So much double-talk & mumbo jumbo designed to confuse people so that they have to hire lawyers to decipher it for them!!!
I love Shakespeare but his works are so rich with imagery that a single sentence can take a great deal of study to fully understand.
I think that effective writing should be clear & concise, readable & easily understandable. Perhaps because I was a copywriter for 3 years & it was drilled into us to be as brief & clear as possible. Maybe because I write the way I speak, very straightforward & direct.
Anyway, don't lose faith. Admittedly I haven't read much philosophy but from what I gather much of the texts are pretty rough going! It's not just you! Stay with it! There is a whole exciting world of thought to explore. It may just take a long time to read through. Just have a dictionary on-hand in case you get stuck on an unfamiliar word. Reread a sentence or passage until it makes sense to you.
Hey, there are always "Coles notes" or "Cliff notes" or you can research on the internet. Perhaps someone has explained the text in plain english somewhere.
Good luck! Don't let confusion discourage you. We've all been there!

Philosophy is simply a persons understanding or theory of how life and the universe operates. Nearly everyone that contemplates any philosophy will come up with conclusions that make sense to their reasoning system. That is why it is such a great subject for discussion. If your right, that you think differently, you have one of the necessary qualities to be a good philosopher.

The 'wording' of most philosophy is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to understand for any of us. Why don't you try going through each sentence with a good dictionary and a good thesaurus, and literally 're-write' every sentence you read until you can understand it. Use 'small words' for the big ones that are difficult for you to understand. I know that it sounds 'impossible' but once you get 'into' it you'll see that it's simply a 'good study habit' to get into ... and you'll also see that 'understanding philosophy' is really very 'basic' and 'easy' ... and also LOTS OF FUN once you learn how to 'translate' those big words. HAVE FUN.

theres a book "sophies world" which gives an overview of philosophy for ordinary people who don't want to struggle with reading the original writings. That's where i get most of mine from.
