The Gold Coast (not "golden") is just about the priciest area in the city. Still, I wouldn't really describe it as a "hip" place to live. You're more likely to find a wealthier, older crowd right along the lake, and you'll certainly go inland to find the best clubs. Realize that Chicago has excellent transportation and that all the beaches are public, so you can get to the beach (in summer, of course--you wouldn't want to go there now) easily whenever you want.

That's a long commute from any of these three locations. The Gold Coast is certainly not a bad place to live, and yes, there are still a lot of bars and restaurants nearby.

The neighborhood has become a lot tamer than it reportedly used to be. Burton Naturus is notoriously bluenosed, and as you may know, Chicago has a tendency toward one-man rule inside many of its wards, so a lot of the lurid stuff that some people used to come to Rush Street for just isn't there anymore. There aren't as many comedy clubs as there used to be, and theatre has dropped off, but that's a citywide problem. Performers didn't get paid what they were worth here, they got paid a lot closer to what they were worth elsewhere, so market discipline kicked in: a lot of the talent relocated to the coasts, where it saw better pay.

On the plus side, the beach is still there and people seem to be getting a lot friendlier. There are still places to go at night, though, with at least one jazz club on Rush that comes to mind, that wasn't there until a few years ago, Second City is still a short distance away up on Wells, and foot traffic is picking up for the first time in years.

I wouldn't care to attempt any long term projections. Chicago, in general, seems to be in a long term decline and that's going to eventually affect every neighborhood in it, but in the short run (over the next few years), if you can find a place you can afford in it, I'd say the Gold Coast would be the best choice of the three, followed by Lincoln Park, then Wrigleyville.

If you want to be closer to work in Gary, try looking at University Village (http://universityvillagechicago.com/Chapa/UV.nsf/home?OpenForm). It's on the other side of the Loop (near South Side) and probably a lot cheaper than the Gold Coast. The clientele is considerably younger than the Gold Coast residents. It's not near the beach, but close enough so that you can get too the lakefront pretty quickly. There are new bars and shops in the area thanks to the new residences. There are also new lofts and things closer to Soldier Field along Michigan Ave. (http://www.greatchicagorealestate.com/michigan_ave_lofts.htm

http://www.chicagosbest.org/locomobile_lofts.htm
http://www.dreamtown.com/neighborhoods/south-loop.html) Like University Village, bars and restaurants are popping up in the South Loop area overnight.

Both areas are really close to the expressways that lead to Gary, so you can walk out your door and hop right on...
