Native americans have become very reliant on "the system" ie. living on reservations and such. Therefore they have been held back by "the system."

Fire water? Really? Are you trying to being culturally insenstive, cause you are.

Why do Native people have a high rate of alcoholism? I'll answer that question.
Before colonization only approx. two tribes had any form of brew. These tribes only used the brew during ceremony and not for recreational purposes. All other tribes didn't have any form of alcohol. When colonizers came they introduced alcohol to Native people. They saw how strongly it affected them and decided to purposely use it to break down Native people. This is well documented. Why did it affect Native people so strongly? Think about this:
How long has there been a form of Alcohol in Europe? Well, forever right (look at stories of greeks and romans, look at the bible, etc...). Okay so they had a LONG chance to build up tolerance to alcohol. Well, how long have Native's had alcohol, only a couple hundred years, which is nothing compared to Europeans. They haven't had a chance to build up the tolerance.
Also, it wasn't a part of their culture so they didn't know how to react when drunk, how much to drink etc...

So that's how alcohol was introduced and it has stuck since then.
Why has it stuck. Think about this. Native history is filled with the experiences of Genocide, Rape, Torture, Kidnapping, Sterlization, Cultural Genocide and many Native people still arent' allowed to (or aren't supported in) practicing their ceremonies. They are still oppressed. They still experience racism. So there is a lot to heal and not much availalbe to do the healing. So, they drink for the same reason as any other people, to hide and numb the pain. There is just a LOT of pain.

Hope this gives you some history. Of course it is different for each individual, this is just a general description.

And I am a Native woman.

Tribal culture is everybody helping everybody.Modern culture is every man helping himself. If you are connected to the tribal culture ,you are connected to the hurt and the pain of the divide. Some can rise in it. Many are overwhelmed.Numbness is an escape. Most White men hide their pain in public, the native who is public in his drunkeness is all men.We are all in pain.We are all disconnected. From what? The native has in living memory the connection to all the life on this planet. We have this in ancestral memory, thus it is less acute. If you were told all your life, what you value is worthless, what you know is useless, your language has no word for profit, you are backward, and on and on every day relentlessly, how much self-esteem would you carry?
