I think you mean pointing up, towards the sky? So that any sparks exiting the muffler do not catch dry grass stubble on fire. Also so that the tractor can cross water without the muffler becoming submerged, killing the engine. Farmers often modify their pick up mufflers so that they exit out of the front grill, and also point upwards, for the very same reasons. They do this with most any serious off-road vehicle, as well.

they did have tractors that had the exhaust under the body but when driving on rough land like a plowed field they got pulled off also fields as in hay fields would catch fire and a smouldering bail of hay would get into the barn and burn the farmers barn ,cattle etc. with the muffler going up it gives the spark a chance to cool before it hits the ground and the exhaust is high enough to let the farmer breathe

It comes strait up off the engine, because it doesn't matter where it is located when the tractor is working. You will notice that the stack is always located high enough over the drivers head to keep him clear of the exhaust.

Tractors are vehicles which are used in rugged terrain and naturally, having the muffler assembly on the underside of the vehicle would invite damage!

if pointed down, the exhaust could bet trapped under the tractor and be a hazard to the driver. If pointed up, it disippates and is not a thtreat to the driver.
