McAfee all the way. I have had Norton in the past. Even updated it a lot. The virus attacked thier software. Emagine getting a virus because you have Norton. Well that what happened. I like McAfee and it doesn't give me any problem. It just does it job. Most of the time it leave me alone until I get in unwanted territorie and it stop me and tell me not to go there.

This is not my answer, but I think it helps your question:
These reviews are really informative. I guess at the end of the day Norton and McAfee are pretty close. But I feel it is important to tell you that while these programs may work well, good luck getting cooperation from Symantec. I had a drive crash, and I lost everything (yeah, I know, don't say it!). I had purchased Norton online (which at the time seemed like a great option). It was up and running and doing its thing. No complaints there. But after I lost my drive, I emailed Symantec's customer support to see how I could reinstall it. Their answer was that I needed my order # which I can find in email. But my drive crashed I told them. So they told me, sorry, can't help you, because "we don't keep track" of your order. But that is not true, because when you year is up, they are hounding you to pay for the next version. How come they can keep track of that? They offered no solutions other than to buy it again. Once I got the new drive, I decided I did not want to give Symantec any business, so I switched to McAfee. It too does the job. I also ordered it online, but they offer you the option to buy a hardcopy too (for a small and reasonable fee). Symantec might offer that too, but I will never find out. As long as it is possible, I will give my business to a company that works with me, not one that tells me "too bad". I took a marketing class eons ago where the teacher said, if you want to give a business a loud message, don't buy their product. Well, that is what I am doing, and I stongly urge your readers to choose wisely based on their needs. The editor's choice might be giving your readers a push in the direction of a company, that in my opinion just didn't care about a customer.

Hmmm.. I've tried switching both of the programs. But the thing is both of them are almost the same..the only difference is Norton will eat up more space and RAM... therefore it's quite to say which is the best too... It depends how often you update the latest virus definition. Of course it will not work best if you use pirated antivirus.

I've always run Norton for my servers (especially email) and McAfee for workstations.
Norton is more of a memory hog than McAfee but support is better for the IT community.
McAfee is nice, but the best thing about it is low overhead, while Norton is what I run on my high end workstation, though if I am doing anything taxing I disable auto-protect until system reboot.
Hope that helps.

What? How does noone mention Esets Nod32?
You want the BEST protection. Get Nod32.
Not only is it the best protection from THE MOST WILD threats.. It barely uses anything to run in the background. It's just.. SWEET.

I've tried both. Both work great, but I do have to say that Norton can slow down your computer and give you more problems and errors.

Both are horrible antivirus programs because they are annoying. I suggest you use an antivirus called NOD32. It is one of the best antivirus around and runs at a minimum so its hardly noticeable.
