i have a question on why the people that auditon for americal idol dont sing like recent songs that are out. Is that there not allowed to or they just choose to sing older songs?

The auditions were held during the summer (July - August), so the songs may not seem very recent. I am sure they can sing anything they want, as long as they can "prove" that they have what it takes.

Probably just because they know the older songs better, and some of the older songs have a bigger range, and that's what they want to show off in thier voice.

That's just a guess though.

They choose to sing the classics that the judges and most likely every one will like and know.

I think that the producers may want songs that can relate to all ages, since that is where the voting comes from.

they have to sing songs that the show has permission to use...
