I personally don't think it is. It brings people together as friends and sometimes as more than friends (such as the case was with me... I met my husband on there actually). It lets you keep in touch with old friends, people you went to school with, or make new friends by searching for people in your area. Perhaps you just want to check out some bands... you can do that!
I think it gives people a freedom to do/say things perhaps they never thought they could... like in a blog, similar to yahoo answers... they can vent their frustration or whatever they want... showcase their own talents, be it through writing or music.... Who knows, it could be the big break some people need in order to get noticed in "the industry".
