The constant grammar checks here for instance.

Not always. For some people, it's just really aggravating to see ridiculously bad grammar. It's a constant reminder that our education system must be failing.

I almost always let it go. It gets the best of me when somebody is being a jerk or calling someone else names or something and yet can't even spell elementary school words or form a basic, grammatically coherent sentence.

Arguably, yes.

Part of it is definitely superiority complex, so to speak. But part of it is also an actual strong opinion on grammar and speaking. How you talk or write DOES make a difference in life, whether you like it or not. How you write says something about your ability to communicate, your intelligence/maturity level, and even your personality. Some people recognize this, and some people do not. The people who do are at an actual advantage in life.

There is a tendency for people to spout off about what they know. Almost everyone does it. How fast would you jump on here and correct something someone wrote if they said something wrong about something YOU felt strongly about? Ultimately, isn't that why we are all here? We want to answer questions. Why? To make ourselves feel smart and/or to help people, and because it is fun. There is no difference between doing this for grammar, or just because we have an opinion on why Britney Spears cut their hair off (something you recently wrote about, amongst other things). The problem is in the intention and the attitude. Are they correcting your grammar to feel superior? Or are they doing it because they know bad grammar is a bad thing, and thus they are trying to help? I would bet most of them are doing it for BOTH reasons.

Of course, that ultimately makes the answer to your question: YES.

I think it depends on the personality and how you perceive things. Someone can correct person without a thought of superiority, someone can do it on purpose. But it really makes you feel smarter and superior to those who did the mistakewhich is very pleasing. But personally I try to tell about the mistake tet-a-tet, I just don't want to make them feel stupid or inferior, because no one is perfect and I could be in the same situation.

Maybe so. But there are some people who have obsessions that make it impossible for them to ignore any kind of imperfection. Their lives are plagued with this, and they are truly annoyed and angered by people who don't even try to use proper spelling and grammar. They are trying to change the world and make it more perfect. It doesn't occur to them that they are insulting anybody.
Personally, it bothers me when I don't use proper grammar or spelling.... but I don't care if others make mistakes. And I think it's rude to correct others.

It's not that we feel superior, it's just that it's an affront to the ears, hearing the English language being mangled, and we have the ridiculous notion that others might appreciate being edified. I guess we should just remember that ignorance is bliss and let the other individual be happy.
