Hi. My apartment is 500 square feet, and it is heated by oil. I use around 40 gallons a week in the winter (I live in new england). I think that's an awful lot of oil to be going through in a week. Is that a typical amount? If not, how many gallons of oil SHOULD I be using each week???

Without knowing anything about the unit, you told us nothing about the insulation, the age of the building, etc. I would guess by friends that have the same set-up in areas liken to yours about 35 gallons would be about right.
You could keep the drapes or shades down to stop drafts, something under the door like a carpet to help with drafts, etc. If you have a standing oil burner like we had on the farm, put a pot of water for moisture on the top of it.

No one here can answer that you need to check with other tennants in building to get a better gauge at the amount used weekly
