I am not usually a huge fan of fantasy type books but I thought Harry Potter was very well written. I couldnt put it down and read the whole thing in one day. If you like reading at all, I just dont see how you could dislike J.K. Rowlings way with words. Even if you dont like that type of book.

He does kind of rub me the wrong way. I can't say the books didn't affect my life, though, because they did. I met a lot of people who were into the initial Harry craze (some that still are, God help them), and we had fun as little kids gossipping about magic. It's cute, but it's not something to obsess about. Especially now with the more recent books; I read them and I'm just annoyed. The plots are excruciatingly predictable at this point, and nothing Harry-related has earned my approval since I was roundabout twelve years old or so. They're just not very good books, is all. There's so much better stuff out there.

The movies are good for a laugh, though. I wouldn't watch them for serious, intense enjoyment but for a hearty criticising and hours of sarcasm. Fun!

Nope, I like Harry Potter. And while I agree it's not great art, it's great fun. Any reading is better than t.v. or video games in terms of developing the brain, so I'm all for it.

Reading those books got my daughter interested in reading other long books with more complicated plots, such as the Lord of the Rings, and then on to Jane Austen. Harry Potter is a good bridge from simple books to literature.

Honestly? I'm sort of in the ambivalent range. I've read the books and seen the movie and they're okay. I can see why they're popular. I just hope it gets more kids reading. Right now, as an English teacher, I'm disheartened by how many kids don't read.

On the flip side, I can see how it's frustrating. Harry Potter isn't horrible, and it's quite accessible, but it's far from being the best book series out there. Hell, it isn't even close to being the best fantasy series. Further, it's not even the best children's fantasy series. To repeat my axiom, though, I just hope it gets more kids reading.

I really hate the writing style of the book. Obviously, it was written for children so I try to put that in focus when dealing with the book. I'm sure if I was 7 years old I would adore it, but the writing in the book really sucks. I tried to like it, I really, really did.

Harry, himself, is not a realistic character. It's hard to believe a child with his kind of power wouldn't use it to get out of an abusive relationship like the ones he starts off with.

really, i've never heard anyone say they hate Harry Potter. He seems to be the greatest guy around, in the movies and books. I guess by all the attention he gets...plus mine.
I find that really interesting. Why would someone hate harry potter, when he's such a great guy, has such a longing to belong, to just get everything right....and so on.
but i guess everyones entitled to their own choices, and you choose to hate harry potter. I wonder who you like.

Absolutely not! I love it, but I can see why you wouldn't. It appeals to a certain kind of reader. I, myself, used to think it was just a bunch of rubbish but then I actually sat down and read the books and they turned out to be really great.
