Isreal bombed Iraq, not Iran. 1983, I think. But not a general bombardment. They attacked a nuclear plant being built, reduced it to ruble.

That's the absolute truth and extent of the attack. It wasn't a war, or declaration there of.

But when people in the know talk about the likelihood of Israel bombing Iranian nuclear facilities, it is from this incident that they base their predictions on. They've done it before (to Iraq).

For what it's worth, Israel has a logistical issue with an attack on Iran. They don't have the current ability to send fighter bombers that far, and return them safely to Israel. Fuel capacity. That is why it would at least be a co-attack, where the US provided mid-air refueling for the Israeli attackers.

I'm not sure that Israel has in fact attacked Iran. What Israel DID do was attack Iraq in spectacular fashion in 1981. They destroyed a nuclear power plant and set back Iraq's nuclear capabilities by years if not decades. This may well be the attack you are thinking of.
