I've notice large businesses (or clubs made up of small businesses like flowers.com for example) seem to have greater success over the internet than smaller ones even though they offer identical goods or services to the public. Does this mean that search engines are not offer a leveling playing field that will help small businesses succeed over the internet?

Big companies have larger pockets to get there name up in the search list. Companies are able to do this with yahoo, google, etc. How do you think search engines make money?

One way of small companies to advertise wisely over the internet is to advertise withing local webpages such as Newspapers, local tv webpages, local radio stations webpages, etc. As far as people buying from these small companies, thats up to the consumer.

For me it has more to do with trust. I've heard too many stories of your products not getting there for a month or more, no refunds, and lousy customer service. I'm more likly to buy from internet stores that have been rated well with customers on sites like pricegrabber, though, because they're usually cheaper than bestbuy, etc.
