The original title is "O Cantador" written by Chico Buarque, so the original was probably in Portuguese by a Brazilian! It appeared in America by guitarist George Benson at the same time as a version by . . . ?Sara Vaughn? I am drawing a blank. The English lyrics are really good and it is a GREAT song. The original version is weird, with accordion lead and other sounds I don't associate with the English version! Their are many versions of this song available and I learned it from the sheet music so I do it more up-tempo than Ive heard it.

The original Brazilian song "O Cantador" ("The Singer") was written by Dori Caymmi and Nelson Motta. The song is extremely popular and there are famous versions in Portuguese by Elis Regina, the composer himself (Caymmi) and many many others. "Like A Lover," the English version, is not a translation but has its own lyrical meaning.
