Sometimes the atoms will fit together like a puzzle, that is crystalography, but I don't think that's the answer they want when they ask about chemical bonds in general

they share or transfer the electrons in the outermost valence levels. All chemistry is based on sharing electrons.

two atoms combining to form a new larger atom is nuclear fusion ... not "chemistry" ... All chemistry is based on sharing electrons.
