Yes, I think routes like 66 should be preserved as historic routes (this has already happened to parts of it in New Mexico and Arizona).
This route has historical significance just like the Oregon Trail, The Trail of Tears, Lewis & Clark, Pony Express Trail etc.
Hardly a trail, but many, many migrants used it to head west for a better life (out of the dust bowl to the lure of California) during the depression in the 1930's.
It must hold memories for a lot of citizens, not unlike Ellis Island really.
I have travelled parts of it on several occasions and think it is a real slice of Americana.
