It is safe to say that mostly everyone has heard the phrase "Sex Sells." Who do you think is the primary target for this phrase?

The phrase doesn't have a target—it's a description of the reality. Just look at advertising.

Men like images of sexy women, yes, but women also want to be considered sexy (we might like the images of men too.)

Advertising is a multi-billion dollar industry. If it didn't work then they wouldn't spend that kind of money on it. The phrase is just saying that sexy ads sell products; which is true.

The traditional target audience use to be 18 to 34 males. But now it has expanded in both directions

i think the primary target of that phrase is advertising personnel. if all else fails and you cant think of something clever or interesting to sell your product, sex it up. put some girls in bikinis and some guys in board shorts and voila! you have your ad campaign.

Sex sells to men and women.

Women are used as symbols to sell items to men, but also as "Role models" to sell to women.

Men want a woman that looks like the poster
Women want to look like the woman in the poster to get men.


To say it is only aimed at men is a little short sighted. Have you ever wondered why women's magazines are full of semi naked women? Exactly the same as men's magazines.

Movie producers who want to get a winning formula for selling their movies to an audience. Sex is not just "physical sex" but "romantic" or "platonic".
