Most of the northern suburbs are gay friendly. The Lakeview and Lincoln Park neighborhoods in Chicago are very gay friendly, but they are in the city. Evanston is also gay friendly. Once you get into Lake County, it is usually more gay friendly the closer you are to Lake Michigan and more conservative the further you go inland. DuPage County and Wheaton to the west of the city are very unfriendly towards gay people.
edit> Although I am more familiar with northern Cook County and southern Lake County, my personal experience is that DuPage County is perceived as being very conservative. A cursory look at Wheaton shows that The Princeton Review ranks Wheaton College 4th where the gay community is least accepted and that the college banned dancing until 2003. Presidential election results show DuPage County has not voted majority Democrat in over 50 years.

Oh and to Correct Christopher...I live near Wheaton and I really hate to say this...but Wheaton is actually VERY gay friendly...I don't know where he's getting his information from!
I'm a member of Wheaton Drama and let me tell you...we have plenty of gay/lesbian members!
The Far West Suburbs are actually a LOT more tolerant that many City dwellers believe us to be!
DuPage, Kane and even Kendall counties are really great places to live...and I say this as a NATIVE Kane county resident!
