I've been reading on the internet that Martin Scorsese rip off some foreign movie to make The Departed. People are saying that it is not just a remake but a frame-by-frame rip off. Is this true? Did anyone see the other movie? Do you still think Martin Scorsese still deserves to win best director if this is true?

"The Departed " is an adaptation of the Hong Kong movie "Infernal Affairs" and Scorsese is not shy in acknowledging the source whenever he receives any accolades for "The Departed".

"In 2003 Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment acquired the rights for a Hollywood remake, titled The Departed, which was directed by Martin Scorsese, and stars Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson. The Departed was released on October 6, 2006, and won four Oscars at the 79th Annual Academy Awards, including Best Picture."

Just because the movie is based on another film does not mean it is a rip-off. Scorsese knew he was directing a film based on another Hong Kong film called Infernal Affairs. The two are similar and different. It's Boston (Irish / State Troopers) vs. Hong Kong (Triads vs. Police). He totally deserves the oscar!

I think he got the Oscar because the Academy decided it was time to give him one. Babel was a better movie.
