To be fair, Whitaker's portrayal of Amin was very, very well done. Perhaps the content of the film (Venus), or O'Toole's choice in character didn't do it for the Academy?
Ah well, everyone knows Peter O'Toole is a fantastic actor. Maybe next year...

First off, Brown Eyed Girl, Meryl Streep has won twice.

Second, Forest Whitaker deserved the win tonight. He hasn't won in the past and that's a shame, but, like with many Oscar losers, time has rendered a new verdict on who deserved to win, like with 'Raging Bull' and 'Citizen Kane' . Who even remembers who beat him out for 'Lawrence of Arabia' anyways? He didn't get his due then, but he's definitely condsidered to be a legend. Screw those Oscar idiots, of the past, I mean. But it was a well-deserved win for Whitaker.

The first person who replied got it right. Peter O'Toole should have won, but hey, it's a popularity contest in Hollywood. I guess they will remember him when he's gone (knock on the wood).

He's a great actor though.

Its not that they don't like him, its the fact of what the actor/actress submits to the academy to be viewed. Thats why certain actors, like Peter O'Toole seem to never win anything, even though he's an amazing actor.

I have the feeling that he's going to be one of those poor bastards that was never really respected in life, but will be revered as a legend in death.

Maybe his recognition will come next year when he's a nominee...in the In Memoriam category.
