I have been pondering this theory for a while.. I believe that we are born with our sexuality and that it isn't choice so do you think it is possible that there are more gay people now because we no longer need to procreate as a society?

ok well i am looking for opinions from people who also believe that homosexuality is not a choice... think about it if we are born one way or the other why would there be more now if not for evolution

I see the point about procreation... that would be what would lead to evolution... hmm maybe my theory doesn't work

I guess it can't be proven as there are no facts if there are more homosexuals or they are just more open.... it is just something interesting to think about

That's false:
First there's no increase in homosexuality just more visibility and acceptance of it, just like in most of societies like Greece and the Far East prior to the arrive of abrahamic religions.
Evolution is guided by natural selection and hence by reproduction and the genes that are transfered by it, then the like for the opposite sex (like in heterosexuals and bisexuals) is more likely to be favored by the genes than the exclusive like for the same sex.

Homosexuality is not evolution - people are more aware and accepting of it. Homosexuality has always been here but nobody really dared talk about it in the past.
Don't forget also that gays and lesbians still have children - it's just that the children are raised by same sex parents. There's lots of heterosexual couples who don't want to or cannot have children without a donor or surrogate mother, the same as gay people. And yes, we are born being either gay or straight - it's not a choice. I've met a few who "became" gay or lesbian or even straight later in life because they found the right person or they got tired of living a lie. I am a lesbian and I was born that way. Homosexuality is not new, nor is it the end of the human race.

I agree with hobbie, I am of the belief that we aren't all born with our sexuality, that some do indeed choose. Not all, but some. I also don't believe that there are more gay persons because we no longer need to procreate...many homosexual couples have children, and many straight couples do not. There aren't any more gay people than there were a hundred years ago...there are just more openly gay people because persons of this era are a slight more informed on the subject, and thus homosexual persons can feel more comfortable in their own skin.
However your question has some interesting theory, and it made me laugh if nothing else. I'm gay because I'm more evolved...maybe I can be the new girl on Heroes...lol...
Just for reference, I'm not a straight girl...for some reason I feel the need to say that, because people on here always think I am...

Well, I personally think the thought is interesting. I guess it is just an extension of some of the studies I have heard about, where animals in overcrowded situations often become sterile due to stress. This is a different situation, but I think it is similar in some ways.
That being said, is there any evidence of an increase in homosexuality? There is certainly more homosexuals that are 'out', but that can be easily explained by the simple fact that it is more accepted today than it was 30 years ago. That doesn't mean that there are more homosexuals.

look up the definition for the word evolution. The only way those traits could be passed on to cause evolution is for homos to re produce. The premise of evolution is that the stronger survive and breed there fore only strong traits suited for that enviroment pass on. Things don't spontaneously evolve. It isn't a magical process, people who have more kids are going to influence the next gen more than others. SO NO!!!! Giraffes don't have longer necks from stretching, they have them because when food went scarce only giraffes with longer necks could reach them. Considering the amount of teen suicide and the amount of gay bashing and the practically miserable exp. put on gays by society and the fact they don't reproduce would point to the fact that it is not a product of evolution.

I think what we perceive to be an increase in homosexuality is something that was always there in society -- but now homosexuality and bisexuality are much more accepted so people are more open about it.
The evolution card? I think one reason homosexuality/bisexuality existed was because it allowed for sexual expression and sexual release without the fear of pregnancy in the human species, something that might want to be avoided in times of famine or overpopulation, especially in early extended family groups.
I think too, in hunting groups of early male humans, sexual expression between men might have been a form of bonding when they were absent from females for extended periods of time.
As far as inheritance goes, one does see evidence of homosexuality/bisexuality in family trees over several generations.

Where do you get the idea that there is such a thing as evolution anyway? Where is your proof? And besides, evolution would try to keep propogating the species. Homosexuality does not allow for procreation, so no, it has nothing to do with evolution, which is just an unproven theory in itself. The increase in homosexuality really has to do with the fact the world is becoming less and less God fearing. Also, the mainstream media is pushing the homosexual agenda on us constantly and trying to make us think that homosexuality should be accepted more. And since people are thinking that, they are more willing to experiment.

No I don't think that we have more gay people because we no longer need to procreate as a society. I think gay people choose their sexuality based on their feelings.

Supposedly the trait for homosexuality is in genes.
but so is the trait for alcoholism.
Can we get over these addictions by making the right choices and by truly understanding who you are rather than what you prefer?
