Our kids are 6 and 3 yrs and we just want to drive or take a ferry to some place nearby

A holiday is meant to be enjoyed by all so don't burden your wife or yourself doing the same things at home like looking after the children who at these ages are too young to appreciate the sights and sites. If you want all in your family to enjoy a holiday, don't drive far (more than 1 hour away) as you'll be tired and the children will feel cooped up after some time. If it is nearby for a day trip, maybe you can take a ferry to Batam Island. Not much to do in a day, so quick shopping and sightseeing. That's not a holiday to me!
If it is for a couple of days, take a direct coach to Malacca's A'Famosa where you can stay and enjoy the facilities (which includes various entertainment for the whole family, especially your kids) and rent a car for drives to nearby Malacca town (30 minutes) to visit the historic sites. If you have a maid, bringing her to handle the kids while you and your wife can be free to shop and explore. Or if you have friends with similar age children, come in a group and different adults take turns to look after the children while the others go sightseeing.
Another option is to go for a cruise. There are regular trips to Penang which is not too far away. Time onboard can be used for relaxation and rent a car or charter a taxi to move around when you are in Penang. Then you can opt to use a family berth on a train back to Singapore as this will allow the children space to move around and for you and your wife to stretch your legs.

u can travel there via the highway.. will only took u 3 hrs from singapore.. there's a lot of interesting place to visit.. excellent scenery driving .. there's also ferry to nearby island if u wish to go..

your kids may not be in proper school now so take this opportunity to enjoy your holidays during off season[ not week end or public/school holiday ], no crowd no advance booking of what ever ! many of the business even charged less or giving discount !
go to Tioman Island or any one of the islands near by such as Rawa, Tinggi, Sibu, Permanggil, Aur etc etc ! i am sure your kids would love the sea n they can even spend the whole day playing at the beach front n its free !
your family is just nice to take any of the full board package[ 3D2N or 4D3N ] on offered, meaning just drive to Mersing n everything would be taking care of ! or by ferry from Singapore !

Leave the car at home! Take a bus or ferry (from Chamngi Point) to Desaru; there's an excellent holiday centre there.

Some island in Johor, such as Pulau Tioman. Nice beach.
A bit further, Malacca. The Night Safari is nice, they have a lot of shows such as cow boy show, animal show, which is the children favourite. There is a lot of historical place to visit in Malacca and nice food. Furthermore, only3 hrs from Singapore.

Its really depend on yr kids, what they love, if they love snorkeling or scuba try tioman island. Just take a ferry to the island from singapore. Very nice and full of rest holiday. My kids love it so much.
But if your kids love more on fun stuff like roller coaster or gaming then take a drive KL. Sunway lagoon is one of the nice place for it. Or Berjaya times square, for shopping and fun stuff. NIte life too for you. try for www.cuti-cutimalaysia.com. my for a survey.

genting highlands???//You might think it's far but it's perfect for the whole family...........especially the cable car rides if you take a bus to genting,the themeparks rides,shopping!!!entertainment!!!!!!...
seconds choice,kuala lumpur......bring them to somewhere educational like the petronas twin towers????KL tower????>..or maybe Petrosains Discovery centre located at Suria KLCC shopping mall at the foot of the twin towers of petronas....
third choice,desaru beach...the beach the sun and everything...peaceful and quiet..........relaxing..........
