I heard that some classical music can help stimulate the mind and therefore help retain information while you study. Having it as background music is good. If this is true, what specific songs would be good to listen to??

Yes, very calm music, no lyrics, just instrumental/a'ccapella
Classical Music

For me it's Italian Mandolins, very nice calming music, helps me focus or relax

It really depends on you. Classical music helps some people calm down and relax so they can concentrate. It revs other people up.

There's been a lot of talk about Mozart as a brain-builder (the music is very complicated and makes lots of connections). You might try that.

I once bought a set of CDs that were supposed to alter your brainwaves, and make you creative or sleepy or whatever. What a waste of money! It may work, but the music was toooo creepy for me to deal with.

Try it and see. You can probably borrow music from your local library so you don't have to shell out the bucks. Or maybe from the music teacher . . . .

well, it all depends on your own method of study. if your brain can multitask and have many different items of thought processed at once then you can probably learn better if you are listening to some form of music.
there is one downfall, however. you may associate one piece of information with a piece of music and therefore you would need the musical section to recall what you learned when you were listening to it.

NPR, today, said that music helps with math and ...logic I think.

Symphonies are supposed to be the cat's meow, ESPecially Mozart's music. There's even an "official" name for it. The Mozart effect.

If you PLAY an instrument, even better!
