they are used for both, but i'm sure there are some that are more for looks, lingerie, than others. but you can get corsets that make you look skinny.

Depends on the type, the ones to make you look skinny are meant to go under something mainly a dress and their are also corsets that are meant for Lingerie, Also some corsets that are underwear are really cute on top of a shirt.

Corsets are very versatile. They do help hold everything in, but they can be worn as lingerie or under a suit jacket if it is done tastefully (not sluty). They only time I have ever worn one was under my wedding dress. They are VERY uncomfortable.

they are used mostly to give the body a certain figure, mainly the "hour glass" look i believe it is called.
