I hiked up Ol Donyo Lengai. It was great, although my altitude sickness kicked in & I didn't make it all the way up. A friend who finished the climb said the lava craters looked very cool in the early morning fog as the sun came up.
We left our campsite about 1:30am & started the hike around 2:15. We hiked in rain which didn't help the climb at all, but made it more obvious we were hiking on ash rather than a rocky mountain. Eventually I had to turn back, but some people continued on with the other guide, reaching the top around 4, to wait for the sunrise.
If you do this climb, make sure you have powerful flashlights & are prepared for any weather contingency.
