I am sorry I read the book 30 years ago. Excellent book, almost 900 pages and read it in three days. Your question is some what profound. I subscribe to the notion that slavery is still alive and well here in the United States. Only now it includes both whites and blacks. Share cropping is no less slavery with out the benefits, I know you just rolled your eyes. Listen when the slaves were supposedly freed many of them remained on the same plantations and were allocated a area to farm. The harvest was to be shared with the property owner. The property owner carried them in his store until harvest and then they settled up, The land owner got a greater amount of money this way than before. With less heart ache or hassle. He no longer need to provide the needs of the slaves now it was on them. The answer to your question is simple it was just more economical to have slave, If a person could give you a really good answer those same people could tell you why the Credit Card companies charge as much as 29% interest,.......simply economics. They could do it and who was going to stop them. England needed Cotton, flacks, wool, beef, and so on. They weren't about to try to stop the colonies from having slaves, further more in Great Britain it was legal anyways. Please keep in mind that not all of the states had a large slave population.
In the 1700s slavery was alive and well, if you study economics you will find out that by the 1860s slavery was no longer a cheap way of doing the work around a plantation as a matter of fact if they had not been freed by the government the owners would have done it anyways as it was costing them more to keep a slave as to hiring the job done for wages.

Read "Roots" for yourself, because I didn't. However, back in the 1700s, slavery was an accepted form of labor. No one recognized it as wrong, and really didn't know any better. Humanity has been evolving since Creation, and continues to do so. You can't fix the mistakes of our forefathers, nor can you apologize for their actions. You can only review history and learn from it - hopefully learn enough not to repeat it.

It could have been avoided. The US government is still using slave labor but it is in China, India, Thailand, Mexico ect. As long as big business is focused on maximizing profit-people's rights and living conditions are ignored. it is very sad.
