The studios push for their people to be nominated. Sometimes a studio will push a star character as a "supporting" character, because they think they have a better chance to win. Occassionally you see the opposite happen, where a supporting actor is pushed to be nominated as a star. This is more rare, but it has happened a few times. Ultimately the Academy members make their own choices, but when all you hear from the "Dreamgirls" studio is that Jennifer Hudson was a great "supporting" actress, you get it in your head that this is what she should be voted for. Ultimately it is all politics.

I suppose it has to do with the time on screen.
Nicole Kidman won as best actress, yet, her role is IMO; smaller than the other actresses, yet, she has less time. In "the hours" IMDB site says that
"Paramount and Miramax weren't sure whether to put Nicole Kidman forward as Best Supporting Actress (where she would have been in direct competition with her 2 co-stars, probably canceling each other out) or as Best Actress (even though from a screen running time perspective it is a supporting role). Meryl Streep is in the film for 42 minutes, Julianne Moore for 33 minutes and Kidman for 30. Obviously the decision to go for Best Actress was the right one."
So, it's for the time, but at the end, it looks like it's the producers' choice.

That's easy. Beyonce is a bigger star so Jennifer was dubbed "Supporting" actress. We all know that it was obviusly Ms. Hudson who carried the movie. Congrats to her and her Oscar win.

I agree! Cate Blanchett became into effective in "Notes on a Scandal." do no longer trouble approximately it however. Ms. Blanchett has been doing and could proceed to do great movies for an particularly long term. She has real expertise. Jennifer Hudson gained the conflict, yet Cate Blanchett will win the conflict.

There are no rules for what constitutes a supporting versus a leading performance. There are no minimums in terms of screen time or lines. As another posted, it's just a matter of what the studio pushes for and what the votes pick when voting for nominations.
