Why is Barack Obama considered a Black Presidential Candidate when his mother is white?

So his mother is white, his father is black. He does look a little black if you ask me, but I am color blind when it comes to race anyway. I think the bigger issue is that he makes a great candidate and that they only reason people are making a big deal about the color of his skin is because there has never been a black president anymore and they are just focused on that, when they should be focused on what his message is.
