The most common extesion is .com and is used for commercial purposes though private individual uses it too, .net and .biz is used very much the same as .com, .org is used is used mainly by charitable organisations, .edu is used by colleges, .gov is by the government
Basically each extention allow you to identify the purpose of each website.

Signifies certain organizations - com is for company, org for organization, net is network I suppose, and on. Most personal websites are dot coms.
