Being uncertain of your age, I don't know what to reccomend, so I will suggest things I read. I'm 14, and read adult books and children books, so these will vary.
Robin Hobb's books are adult books. Robin Hobb's books are fantastic. Her first three trilogies are all related; the Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Traders Trilogy and the Tawny Man trilogy. The Farseer and the Tawny Man are about the same people. There are magics, including the Wit, a despised magic, allowing one to bond with an animal. The first series is about a royal bastard, who becomes an assassin, with the Wit.
The last one is set fifteen years later, that time having been taken up in the Liveship Traders, and Fitz, the Witted assassin, returns from a life alone with a different identity to Buckkeep castle, the royal castle he grew up in.
The second trilogy is set far to the south of Buckkeep, at the 'Cursed Shores'. It can be read seperately, as all the characters are different but for a small acception that you don't find out is a person from the first trilogy until you read the third trilogy.
Her other trilogy is nothing like those ones, set in a completely different time and place. They have magic and all, too. They are called the Soldier's Son trilogy. I've only just started them, so I can't say much about them.
She also writes under the name Megan Lindholm. I'm just reading one of her books, the Reindeer People, and it's fantastic, also a fantasy.
Some other good fantasies:
Ian Irvine is supposed to be a great author, I haven't read his books but my brother has, and he has the same fantasy taste. He has three trilogies too, the second set a hundred years after the first, and the last ten years after the second. I think there are monsters and a war between them and humans or something...
There's Cornelia Funke's books. They're great. Especially Inkheart. In that, characters come out of a book. It sounds childish, but it's not. Then there's Dragon Rider and the Thief Lord. The Thief Lord isn't a fantasy, but it still has the same taste to it.
The Inheritance trilogy are fantastic! The third book hasn't come out yet. If you like Harry Potter, you'll love these. The first two books are Eragon and Eldest. They are about a boy who finds a dragon egg. He becomes a Dragon Rider, and has to fight the Empire and King, as the king is an awful person. These books are GREAT, you'll probably like them more than the other suggestions I've made.
Dragon Keeper's pretty good, too. I'm afraid I can't remember the author, though..

Well I read all of the Charlie Bone books. There's five in the series. They are a lot like Harry Potter. It will definitally keep you preocupide for awhile, and help you not feel all obsessed over Harry Potter. I know, thats why I read those books. Oh and someone said Cirque Du Freak. Those are really good books too.

My plan is to re-read the others so I am just finishing the HBP when number 7 comes out, I can roll right in with it fresh in my mind. There are a lot of things about book 6 that I'm sure I missed, because YES, I skipped ahead and read the end, I couldn't stand it. After that I was really deflated!
Being older (38) I have a lot of other book interests though, so I can be pretty patient to wait for it to come out. I am excited but I can keep myself busy. I have really wanted to read the Bible cover to cover, I never have and that would give me plenty to do.

If you have yet to somehow read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, I'd pick those up, it's where a lot modern fantasy(Harry Potter included) gets its origins.

well there's a few spin off books from the hp series: one that was written by mugglenet (hp site, obviously) predicting what's going to happen in book 7. however appartently hard to get a copy of, if living outside the us. otherwise philip pullmans trilogy 'his dark materials' is along the same lines: fantasy. came out during the hp frenzy and bagged a few awards, but was untimately swapped by the success that is hp. not as good but definitely worth a look.

Try reading the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman. It's fantastic! And although I am a little old to be enjoying this, I really, really liked the Lemony Snicket books.

Here's a cool idea: why don't you write a short story/novel with this title: "Waiting for Harry Potter 7"? I've heard of somebody who wrote a play called "Waiting for Godot" and became famous. ..
