I work in arestaurant and have lots of dinged up wood chairs. Can I touch them up with a rag or q tip and stain without stripping them? Is there a better way. Thank you. JD

Stain will not penetrate a lacquer sealed wood finish. If you have dings that have exposed raw wood, then your plan will work. If you know what lacquer was used originally, stain the damaged areas and use that same lacquer to finish it.

NO ! Never. You can not mix water base stain or paint with any other oil or lacquer based products. They just won't 'mix'.

Generally not. However, you might get lucky, try it. The stain may just lay on top of the lacquer and dry. In which case it will eventually wear off and rather quickly. But you will have gained some time before refinishing.
